Aluminium alloy 6082 is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys. Alloy 6082 is known as a structural alloy. In plate form, 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. As a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of 6082 has seen it replace 6061 in many applications. The addition of a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure which in turn results in a stronger alloy.
It is difficult to produce thin walled, complicated extrusion shapes in alloy 6082. The extruded surface finish is not as smooth as other similar strength alloys in the 6000 series.
In the T6 and T651 temper, alloy 6082 machines well and produces tight coils of swarf when chip breakers are used.

    5052 - H32 Sheet and Treadplate

    Aluminium alloy 5052 in H32 temper has very good corrosion resistance to seawater and marine and industrial atmosphere. It also has very good weldability and good cold formability.     Aluminum 5083 plates have higher strength than 5052 plate and has exceptional thermal conductivity. In the tempered condition, it retains good formability due to excellent ductility. It is highly suitable for welding and can be hardened by cold work. Because Alloy 5083 exhibits excellent resistance to general corrosion, it is used in marine applications. Since Alloy 5083 is capable of withstanding extremely low temperatures without brittleness or loss of properties, it is especially suited to the cryogenic market.

    High strength alloys with excellent machinability widely used in aircraft. Have limited formability and only fair corrosion resistant in the heat treated condition. Not recommended for fusion welding. Used for high strength parts in aircraft and machinery, including gears and bolts and for security vans where strength ids critical.     The strength of alloy in this group is enhanced by the addition of alloying elements such as copper, magnesium, zinc and silicon. Since this elements show increasing solid solubility in aluminium with increasing temperature, thermal treatments imparts pronounced strengthening. The first step, called solution heat treatment, is an elevated - temperature process designed to put the soluble element or elements in solid solution. This is followed by rapid quenching, usually in water, which momentarily ‘freezes’ the structure and for a short time renders the alloy very workable. It is at this stage that some fabricators retain this more workable structure by storing the alloys at below freezing temperatures until they are ready to form them. At room or elevated temperature the alloys are not stable after quenching, and precipitation of the constituents from the super – saturated solution begins. After a period of several days at room temperature, termed ageing or room temperature precipitation, the alloy is considerably stronger. Many alloys approach a stable condition at room temperature, but some alloys, particularly those containing magnesium and silicon or magnesium and zinc, continue to age – harden for long periods of time at room temperature. By heating for a controlled time at slightly elevated temperatures, further strengthening is possible and properties are stabilized. This process is called artificial ageing or precipitation hardening. By the proper combination of solution heat treatment, quenching, cold working and artificial ageing, the highest strengths are obtained.

    Aluminum Alloy Sheet 3003 is alloyed with 1.20% manganese, which increases the strength of 3003 over commercially pure aluminum (1100 series). 3003 has excellent workability, weldability, and good corrosion resistance. It is used for drawing, forming, spinning, fuel tanks, sheet metal works and other applications that require moderate strength for an aluminum with good weldability. H14 designates the temper, and means that 3003 has been strain hardened and partially annealed. In this condition, 3003 can be easily formed. Embossing or debossing 3003 in this temper should not strain or crack the aluminum.

It is not strengthened by heat treatment, instead becoming stronger due to strain hardening, or cold mechanical working of the material. Since heat treatment doesn't strongly affect the strength, 5086 can be readily welded and retain most of its mechanical strength.

    Aluminium alloy 5454 has very good corrosion resistance, in particular to seawater and general environmental conditions. Strength is medium to high and similar alloy 5754 with good strength in the temperature range 65 to 170 degrees centigrade. It has a high fatigue strength. It is not suitable for complex or fine extrusions.
