Titanium rods are available in both commercially pure (CP) forms (Grades 1–4) and a broad range of alloyed grades, each offering distinct mechanical and corrosion-resistant characteristics:

• CP Grades (1–4): Vary primarily by oxygen content. Grade 1 is the softest and most ductile, suitable for cold forming and highly corrosive environments, while Grade 4 offers the highest tensile strength among CP grades. 

• Alloys (Grade 5 and beyond):

  • Grade 5 (Ti‑6Al‑4V): The most widely used titanium alloy, combining high strength, low density, and excellent corrosion resistance. Common in aerospace, biomedical implants, and marine industries. 

  • Grade 23 (Ti‑6Al‑4V‑ELI): Similar to Grade 5 but with extra-low interstitial elements to enhance ductility and fracture resistance—especially preferred for medical implants. 

  • Grade 7: Contains palladium (0.12–0.25 %) for enhanced corrosion resistance in challenging environments. 

  • Grade 12: Alloyed with molybdenum and nickel, offering superior resistance to crevice and chloride corrosion, ideal for chemical processing and desalination. 

Other less common alloy grades (e.g., 9, 11, 16, 38) offer tailored balances of strength, weldability, and corrosion resistance. 

• Density: Around 4.4–4.5 g/cm³—significantly lighter than steel or other common metals. 

• Strength & Toughness:

  • CP Grades: Tensile strength ~434 MPa

  • Grade 5 (Ti‑6Al‑4V): Modes upward of ~950 MPa tensile strength and ~880 MPa yield strength 

• Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional across a broad range of environments due to a naturally formed oxide layer. Even strong acids like sulfuric or hydrochloric have limited effect unless concentrated. 

• Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Among the highest of all metals—titanium rods deliver impressive load capacity with minimal mass. 

• Physical Behavior: Titanium is non-magnetic with relatively poor thermal and electrical conductivity. Machining requires precision tools to minimize galling. 

• Standards: Commonly manufactured to specifications such as ASTM B348 for round bars and rods. 

• Dimensional Range: Typical diameters range from 5–300 mm, with lengths customizable between ~30–5000 mm. 

• Manufacturing Methods: Includes forging, extrusion, and precision casting. Powder metallurgy—especially for biomedical-grade alloys—is increasingly used, including 3D printing (SLM/EBM).
